I was inspired to write this tutorial from a little stuffed teddy bear my children have, he is very fluffy like this and has the most adorable face. I wanted to dress him up for Christmas so this is what I came up with :)

For this tutorial you'll need:
Paint Shop Pro: (Tutorial written in PSP 6) get a trial version HERE

This tutorial rates a 7 "High Intermediate Skill Level". You will need a basic understanding of PSP, using and editing vectors and working with layers.

Let's get started:

1. Open a new image 500x500, transparent background. NOTE: my screen shots are on a gray background to make it easier to see against the white)

2. Set your foreground/stroke to null, background/fill to white. Select your preset shapes "Eclipse", antialias and vector both CHECKED.

3. Draw an oval for the body, hold down the CTRL key and grab one of the top corners and push in, grab one of the bottom corners and pull out until you have an egg shape.

4. Right click on this layer and convert to Raster, double click on this layer and rename the layer "body".

5. Apply Eye Candy Fur with these settings:
Wave Spacing= 67
Waviness= 16
Hair Length= 67
Shininess= 164
Smooth= "selected"


6. Apply Eye Candy Jiggle with these settings:
Bubble size= 20
Warp Amount= 29
Twist= 84
Movement type= Turbulence


7. Effects, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow with these settings:
Vertical= -2
Horizontal= 0
Opacity= 83
Blur= 3.7
Color= Black


8. Select your preset shapes again, same settings as before. Draw an oval for his leg, click on the object selector and node edit. I did not add any nodes here or change the node type. Shape his leg as shown:


Convert to raster when you're happy with the editing, apply the Eye Candy Fur and Jiggle and the drop shadow with the same settings as before. Rename this layer, Leg 1. Click on this layer and drag it under the body layer.

9. Select your preset shapes again and draw an oval for his other leg and shape as follows:

Convert to raster, apply Eye Candy fur, jiggle and apply the drop shadow. Rename this layer leg 2. Place this layer on top of the body.

10. Select your preset shapes and draw an oval for the head, resize as with the body into an egg shape, convert to raster, apply Eye Candy Fur and Jiggle and apply the drop shadow.


11. Click on your preset shapes, draw an oval for his muzzle, convert to raster, apply Eye Candy Fur and Jiggle, apply the drop shadow.


12. Click on your preset shapes, change your background/fill color to black and draw a circle for his eye, convert to raster, EFFECTS, 3D EFFECTS, INNER BEVEL, use the round preset but make these changes:
Light angle= 268
Intensity= 77
Elevation= 57

Move this layer under the muzzle (layer 5), right click on the eye layer, DUPLICATE, IMAGE, MIRROR. Place where desired.

13. Click on the muzzle layer, then select your preset shapes ROUNDED RECTANGLE shape, change your background/fill color to #800000. Draw a rectangle for the nose, convert to raster, EFFECTS, TEXTURE EFFECTS, BLINDS with these settings:
Color= #C00000
Width= 2
Opacity= 78
Horizontal and Light from Left/Top UNCHECKED.

SELECTIONS, SELECT ALL, SELECTIONS FLOAT, add a new raster layer, EFFECTS, 3D EFFECTS, CUTOUT with these settings:
Vertical and Horizontal= 2
Opacity= 64
Blur= 15
Shadow Color= Black
Repeat the cutout, change the Vertical and Horizontal settings to -2. Deselect.

14. Click on the muzzle layer and add a new layer. Switch your background styles so your red color is your foreground/stroke color and your background/fill is null. Click on the draw tool, FREEHAND LINE, WIDTH 3, SOLID LINE. Antialias CHECKED, Create as vector UNCHECKED. Draw his mouth.


15. Click on your top layer, select your preset shapes- ECLIPSE, change your background styles to Foreground null, background white. Draw an oval and use your node edit to make an eyebrow shape like this:

Convert to raster, apply Eye Candy Fur, apply the jiggle but change the settings to these:
Bubble size= 16
Warp Amount= 14
Twist= 7
Movement type remains the same

Apply the same drop shadow. Duplicate this layer and IMAGE, MIRROR. Place the eyebrows as desired. We are finished with his head so hide layers 1, leg 1, leg 2 and body and MERGE, MERGE VISIBLE. Rename this layer "head".

16. Select your preset shapes, draw an oval for his arm and shape like this:



Convert to raster, apply Eye Candy Fur and Jiggle change the jiggle settings back to these:
Bubble size= 20
Warp Amount= 29
Twist= 84
Movement type= Turbulence

Apply the drop shadow with the same settings. Duplicate this layer, IMAGE, MIRROR and place as desired, rename these layers arm 1 and arm 2, move the head layer to the top. Make any adjustments necessary in placements.

17. Select your preset shapes, draw an oval for the ear and shape like this:

Convert to raster. Apply the Eye Candy Fur and Jiggle and the drop shadow.

18. Click on your preset shapes, and draw a small oval for the inner ear, convert to raster, apply the Eye Candy Fur only, apply the drop shadow.


Hide all layers except for the ear and inner ear, LAYERS, MERGE, MERGE VISIBLE, rename this layer "ear". This is placed behind the head layer.

19. Change your background/fill color to #800000, foreground/stroke color to black, click on your preset shapes, Line width= 2 Draw an oval for his hat, go into node edit, you will need to add a coupld of nodes (CTRL and click where you would like to add a node) to shape his hat.

**If you have any problems shaping his hat, right click on the picture above and save to your hard drive, open it up in PSP and make your hat using this as an example, then just copy and paste your finished hat on your bear.**

Convert to raster when you're happy with the hat. Move this layer to the top. Select your magic wand and click on the red part of the hat to select it, EFFECTS, TEXTURE EFFECTS, BLINDS, same settings as before. SELECTIONS, SELECT ALL, SELECTIONS, FLOAT, ADD A NEW RASTER LAYER, EFFECTS, 3D EFFECTS, CUTOUT with these settings:

Vertical and Horizontal both= 2
Opacity= 64
Blur= 15
Color= Black

Repeat the cutout changing the Vertical and Horizonal settings to -2. Deselect.

20. Click on your preset shapes, foreground/stroke null, background to white, draw the fur around his hat, following the shape of the hat, convert to raster.

Select your retouch tool with these settings:

Soften the edges of the brim like this:


Apply a drop shadow with these settings:

Vertical= 3
Horizontal= 0
Opacity= 40
Blur= 4
Color= Black

Repeat the drop shadow with Vertical setting at -3, all other settings stay the same.

21. Now let's make the little pom pom for his hat. Select your preset shapes, same settings as last used, draw a little circle at the end of his hat. Convert to raster and use the retouch tool to add the same texture as the hat brim, apply the same drop shadow as with the hat brim.

22. Hide all layers except the ones for the hat and LAYERS, MERGE, MERGE VISIBLE. Rename this layer "hat".

23. Now to make his bow tie. Click on your preset shapes. Set your foreground color to #800000, background color to white, line width = 3. Draw a shape for his bow tie. Convert to raster, EFFECTS, TEXTURE EFFECTS, BLINDS (same settings as before). EFFECTS, 3D EFFECTS, INNER BEVEL:

Duplicate this layer, IMAGE, MIRROR.

24. Select your preset shapes, change the shape to ROUNDED RECTANGLE and draw the center of his bow tie, convert to raster and apply the inner bevel. Turn off all layers except the 3 for his bow tie and LAYERS, MERGE, MERGE VISIBLE. Rename bow tie, move this layer under the head. Apply a drop shadow:

Vertical= -2
Horizontal= 0
Opacity= 60
Blur= 3.7
Color= Black


25. Now let's decorate him. Add a new raster layer, click on your tubes and add a candy cane tube, make any adjustments in size that is needed, move this layer under layer "arm 2".*(This candy cane tube is a PSP tube that is included with versions 6 and 7)

26. To make his sign: Click on your preset shapes, foreground color= black, background color= pattern "stained wood" (PSP 6 users can use this picture-Right click and save it to your hard drive)

Change your shape to rounded rectangle, line width= 2. Draw the pole for his sign, rotate slightly. Move the layer if needed to "above" the arm layer. Click on your eraser tool with these settings:

Erase part of the pole so that you have this:

Apply a drop shadow:

Vertical= 5
Horizontal= 0
Opacity= 44
Blur= 3.7
Color= Black


27. Click on your preset shapes, foreground color #800000, background color= white, everything else stays the same. Draw your sign, rotate, convert to raster, EFFECTS, TEXTURE EFFECTS, BLINDS and use the same settings as before. Move this layer to the top and decorate the sign however you wish. Hide all layers except those for your sign and decorations and LAYERS, MERGE, MERGE VISIBLE. Rename this layer "sign".



OK, you're done!!! You can leave him in layer form or Merge all layers visible, resize and export as a tube. I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial. Please let me know if you have any questions or problems and I'll be happy to help :).
