This tutorial is made using PSP 6 and KPT 5: You can visit Corel Corporation for purchasing information on KPT.
Corel has repackaged KPT and you can get The KPT Collection which has version 5,6 and 7 for a great price!
I have included everything you will need for
the mask in this zip. Download zip Unzip this file to wherever you prefer and it will make a folder called
Court Jester Mask Tutorial.
These are the files in the zip:
1. Court Jester Mask_qc.kpt This needs to be placed in FraxPlorer or browse to the file once you
are in FraxPlorer and import it.
2. Court Jester Mask Feathers_qc.kpt This needs to be placed in FraxFlame or browse to the file and import it.
3. Purple Eyes Template_qc.psp Open in PSP when needed
4. Bow.tub, Pearl.tub, Mask Holder.tub and Twink-star-kandy-2.tub
All need to be placed in your tube folder
Step 1
I like to work with a fairly large canvas so open a new image 800x600 with a transparent background.
Step 2
Open KPT 5 FraxPlorer and open my Court Jester Mask fractal preset.
Step 3
Zoom in and with the freehand selection tool set on point to point, draw an eye shape; then edit, cut, to remove the
area. Selections, none to deselect the eye area.
Step 4
With the magic wand, click on the black background, selections, invert; then edit, copy.
Step 5
Open a new image 800x600 with a black background, edit, paste the mask as a new layer. Call this layer "mask 1". Edit, paste as a new layer
again, then image, mirror. Call this layer "mask 2". Adjust the 2 sides so they slightly overlap in the middle.
Step 6
I drew the eyes by following a tutorial found here (link no longer available). The tutorial is called
"Creating an eye using PhotoImpact" and I was able to follow it with no problems in Paint Shop Pro. If you
do not want to draw your own eyes, open up the Purple eye template that I drew that was included in the zip.
Choose edit, cut, and paste as a new layer on your mask. Call this layer "eye 1". It will need to be
resized and placed behind the "mask 1" layer. Zoom in to get it placed in the opening. When
you have it sized the way you want it, duplicate the eye layer and then edit, mirror, call this layer "eye 2". It may
need some slight adjustments in placement.
Step 7
Add a new layer and call it feathers. Open up KPT FraxFlame and open or browse to my feathers
preset and import it.
You will need to use the deformation tool to resize them and place them behind the mask 1 and mask 2
layers. Duplicate this layer as many times as you would like, rotating them so they fill in the open
area. I have used 9 layers of the feathers.
Step 8
Next you will need a holder for the mask. I have included my mask holder as a tube. Add a new layer
and call it "mask holder", it needs to be placed behind the mask either side. Add streamers, which is
a tube included with PSP. I included my bow as a tube as well, add the bow as a new layer and resize with the deformation tool.
Step 9
The pearls were made from the wonderful tutorial by Dizzinz Pearlized
Pearls with KPT 5 Tutorial (**these tutorials are now available by purchase only) I suggest giving this tutorial a try, it is very easy with beautiful results.
I have saved my pearl as a tube if you would like to use it. Add a new layer for each
pearl, resize and place at the end of the fractal (see finished example at the beginning).
Step 10
The sparkle tube was download from Kandy's PSP Tubes I have
included the tube with Kandy's permission for your convenience but please visit her site for a vast
selection of tubes. The sparkle is added as the last layer. Your final step is to merge all layers
visible and frame as desired.
Here's another example using the same technique:
I hope this tutorial has given you some ideas for making masks, it is meant to be
a jump start for your own creativity.
